ON JUNE 24th the Johnstone Press welcomed and celebrated the anniversary of Cumbernauld's local tabloid, the Cumbernauld News.
The Cumbernauld News was first printed in 1961 and has seen overhauling changes, which have seen the readership numbers become unbalanced, at times.
The 50th anniversary of the tabloid has been welcomed also by local MSP, Jamie Hepburn, who unlike the paper is nowhere near fifty years old!
Mr Hepburn, MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth acknowledged the anniversary with a Motion in the Scottish Parliament. In his motion, Jamie said:
"That the  parliament congratulations to the Cumbernauld News, 50 Years Young—That the Parliament congratulates the publisher, editor and staff of the Cumbernauld News as the paper celebrates its 50th year of publication in June 2011; believes that the Cumbernauld News has been a popular source of news and opinion about issues affecting Cumbernauld and the surrounding area throughout this period; notes that it is jointly published with the much older Kilsyth Chronicle, which was established in the late 19th century; wishes both publications all the very best, and looks forward to them continuing to serve their communities for many years to come."

Later commenting, Jamie told “Reaching its half-century is a significant achievement for the Cumbernauld News, and all those who’ve helped make it a success over the years deserve warm congratulations.

“The paper has grown with, and even helped to shape, the town of Cumbernauld as it too has grown and changed since it was first established as a New Town.

“I’m sure MSPs from across the political spectrum will add their names to my motion marking this important anniversary, and of course I wish the editor, staff and readers of the Cumbernauld News all the very best for the future.”
