CUMBERNAULD and Kilsyth SNP MSP Jamie Hepburn has called on North Lanarkshire Council to use new Scottish Government investment to create a Community Hub in Abronhill, and secure the future of Abronhill High School.

The Scottish Government announced late last month that £205 million of additional capital investment is being made available.  This investment will be funding through the Barnet consequentials arising from the Chancellor’s Autumn statement.

£46 million of this investment will go to Scotland’s local authorities with the stipulation that it must be spent on projects which had not yet secured funding.

Mr Hepburn has today written to North Lanarkshire Council to argue that their share of this funding should be spent on building a Community Hub in Abronhill.

Commenting on the announcement Mr Hepburn said: “I am sure that North Lanarkshire Council will join me in welcoming this additional funding, for capital programmes for local authorities.

“The conditions attached to the use of this investment make it ideal for the council to invest in the idea of an Abronhill Community Hub, based at the High School.”

The council’s plans to close Abronhill High School have met with considerable protest and opposition.

The creation of an Abronhill Community Hub formed part of Mr Hepburn’s preferred alternative to the closure as set out in his submission to the council’s consultation on the future of the school.  Such a hub would centre around the High School but would also incorporate the local library and community centre and a public swimming pool.

“This announcement could be good news for those campaigning to save Abronhill High School.  The situation has changed and the council’s plans should change too,” the MSP added.

“Instead of closing this school, and inflicting considerable damage on the local community, the council should be looking to improve the situation for residents of Abronhill.  The best way to do this is to create an Abronhill Community Hub.”

“I know I was not alone in making such suggestions and this announcement makes the creation of such a Hub a real possibility.”
