CUMBERNAULD and Kilsyth’s SNP MSP has realised a statement on the proposed merger between Cumbernauld and Motherwell Colleges.
Announced on 11th January, the two Lanarkshire colleges will now merge ahead of August after due processes are put in place to allow time for a full consultation with stakeholders, learners and staff.
Since the announcement, Cumbernauld’s SNP MSP, Jamie Hepburn has met with Heather Urquhart, the Acting Principal of Cumbernauld College, to discuss the proposed merger of Cumbernauld and Motherwell Colleges.
Commenting on the announcement, when it was made, Mr Hepburn said: “I understand that this proposal is at a very early stage and little of the finer details have yet to be worked out. The bottom line for me will be ensuring that people in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area can still access further education opportunities in their local area, and that any impact on staff can be minimised.”
After his meeting with Ms Urquhart, the MSP talked of his “interest” in the matter and his motivation to protect the “best interests” of local residents.
He said: “I have met with the acting principal of Cumbernauld College to discuss the matter and set out that position. She has informed me of the commitment to engagement with students, staff and the wider community, and I welcome that commitment. I await further details with interest, and I will be endeavouring to make sure that the best interests of the area I represent are fully considered as these proposals develop any further.”
