CUMBERNAULD, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East MP Gregg McClymont has said employees at Barr’s “deserve certainty” over their jobs.
The Labour man’s comments came as the £1.4bn merger deal was suspended by the Office for Fair Trading (OFT) on Wednesday 13th February, 2013.
The OFT suspended the deal after fears that the merger would distort Scotland’s soft drinks market competition.
The Government’s consumer watchgod announced its decision after analysing the corporate marriage, which would see over 300 jobs lost, declaring that a merger could distort the market, announcing further that it was referring the proposal to the Competition Commission.
The investigation will take several months. However, the town’s MP has said that the employees of Cumbernauld-based soft drinks manufacturer AG Barr “deserve certainty” over their future.
He said: "The workforce at Barr's deserve certainty about their future. The OFT investigation must be speedily completed so staff in Cumbernauld know one way or the other whether job losses are on the cards."
