ONE North Lanarkshire teen has been officially declared as the region’s ‘Young Driver of the Year’.

Keiran Donnelly (19) from Viewpark is North Lanarkshire's Young Driver of the Year and was awarded the prize earlier this month.

His selfless behaviour in using his car to help others in his family made him an inspirational winner of the competition.

Keiran has been a carer for his mother, who suffers from epilepsy, from a very young age and saw driving as a key to freedom for him and his family. Since passing his test not only his mother, but his grandparents too, have benefitted from vital journeys to hospital appointments and more. Dedicated Keiran works overtime to afford to run his car.

Keiran was ecstatic at his win. "Winning this competition came as a huge surprise to me. I feel truly thankful to the team at the Young Driver of the Year Award for taking the time to consider my entry. My family were over the moon when they heard that I had won, especially my Mum as she was the reason for my driving. I will always be honoured at winning this prize and it will inspire me to continue driving for years to come."

Keiran's Aunt Lynn, who nominated him for the award, was delighted at the uplifting boost the award had brought to their family. "Everyone in the family is so happy for Keiran. I'm so proud of him, but then I have been ever since I can remember. He's a good, kind hearted young man. When we arrived home his Mum had tears of joy in her eyes. Good things don't happen in our family very often. Thank you very much Young Driver of the Year Award for making my nephew so happy!"

Runners-up were Lyndsay Crawford, 20, of Airdrie and Matthew Quinn, 23, of Motherwell. Lyndsay encouraged others to enter. "My family were delighted! I would greatly recommend others to take part in the Young Driver of the Year Award competition."

Keiran received his award and prize money at a presentation from Councillor James Coyle, Convener of the council's Planning and Transportation Committee, who said: "I would like to congratulate Keiran on winning the North Lanarkshire Young Driver of the Year Award. He is a very deserving winner, unselfishly giving up his own free time to help his Mum and others in his family with daily tasks and outings.

"The Young Driver of the Year Award has been a successful part of the council's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of road safety and reducing accidents. It has highlighted the unsung initiative of many local young people using their cars safely and considerately to help others in their communities. It has been inspirational to hear their stories.
