Commenting, Dennis Canavan says he is a pro-independence “convert” and can be put down to his “experience” in politics.
He said: "I am a convert to the cause of independence and my conversion stems from my experience.
“Having served 26 years as a Member of the Westminster Parliament and 8 years in the Scottish Parliament, I have come to the conclusion that Westminster is completely out of touch with Scotland, whereas the Scottish Parliament responds more readily to the values, the needs and the aspirations of the people of Scotland.
“On issues like free care for the elderly, financial support for students and free prescriptions, the Scottish Parliament has proved to be far more radical and far more progressive than Westminster. In an independent Scotland, the Scottish Parliament would have the power to do much more.
“Independence is not an end in itself. It is a means of achieving greater standards of social justice here in Scotland and giving the people of Scotland the opportunity to help to build a better world, through our full membership of the international community.”
Cllr Alan Stevenson, convener of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth SNP commented:
“I am delighted that Dennis has accepted the invitation to come to both Kilsyth and Cumbernauld to speak about independence. As a former MP for the West Stirlingshire constituency, which included Kilsyth, Dennis knows the local area well and, as someone who was a Labour MP, demonstrates that independence is a vote not for any one party but instead a vote to give Scotland a say in her own future.
“Dennis is respected across political boundaries and I would encourage people regardless of party or even viewpoint on independence to come along and listen.”
Kevin McVey of the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth branch of the Scottish Socialist Party added:
“The SSP is delighted that someone with the record as a campaigner of Dennis Canavan is addressing these local Yes Scotland meetings. It is essential that a positive case is made for an independent Scotland built on the principles of social justice represented by people like Dennis. I hope people come along to the meeting to participate in a discussion on Scotland's future and the type of country we want to be."
