LYFA U21's League Cup Final - Cumbernauld Colts 3 v 1 Jerviston.

It was with some trepidation that the Colts were paired against physical side Jerviston in this League Cup Final. On a very heavy pitch at Wishaw Juniors the Colts showed that skill and determination can overcome aggression. In an even opening spell there were few chances, it was Jeviston however who went ahead against the run of play midway through the half when the Colts conceded a free kick on the edge of their box, a well struck free kick went through the wall past the helpless Geddes into the empty net. The Colts then went on the offensive in an effort to draw level and it was no surprise when they got their equalizer as the half drew to a close, a sweeping move saw Murney spin his marker in the box as he did the defender impeded his way to goal as he pulled his shirt, when no advantage followed the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, the same player stepped up to put the keeper the wrong way as the ball nestled low into the right-hand corner of the net. HT 1-1

The second half was a tense affair, however as it progressed the Colts gained in confidence and thought they had went in front when Boyle following a strong run down the right crossed the ball which was turned into the net by Murney only to be ruled off-side by the assistant. They were not to be denied however and with 25 minutes on the clock an arrow like free kick 30 yards out near the right touchline by Wilkie was met by Carrick inside the box who sent a bullet header into the corner of the net with the keeper posted missing, this was no more than the Colts deserved as they began to look assured. There then followed a 5 minute spell where Jerviston were on top and Colts survived a scare when Wilkie cleared off his own line, this wake-up call was all the Colts needed and within minutes a Murney corner at the other end was turned in by Carrick past the rooted keeper. This knocked the stuffing out of Jerviston and although they were pushing forward in numbers the Colts were well in control and played out the remaining 15 minutes without incident.

A great win by the Colts to lift the club's first silverware of the season.
