CUMBERNAULD Media revealed nine months ago that Morrisons were hoping to open up a new store in Cumbernauld. Last week – nearly one year on, and Morrisons have now taken their hopes forward.

On Saturday, Cumbernauld Media published the story, ‘Morrisons proceed with Cumbernauld store plans’, with the news that the firm had plans to open up a new store on Westfield Road – across the road from St. Maurice’s High School.

The company submitted their proposals as a planning application in principle, on May 18th, 2013, with plans that would see a new development would comprise of a food store, to be occupied by Morrisons; a 6 pump Petrol Filling Station; in addition to a number of mixed uses, such as a drive thru and bar/ restaurant constructed.

In we reported, on Saturday, any new development would see the construction of an up to 58,697 sq. ft Morrisons store, accompanied by twenty-five disabled and twenty-four Parent and Child parking bays, on a flat plain, with two electric shopping carts proposed for those less able, accompanied by an audio induction loop system for hard of hearing store employees.

According to the principle outlines, the new store would be built of materials including buff Facing Brick; dark Green PPC Metal Doors; white Insulated Composite Cladding Panels; dark Green Insulated Composite Cladding Panels; and, PPC Curtain Walling dark green.

The application concludes that, “…this comprehensive design solution will bring a positive, cohesive addition to the local urban context,” adding that a new Morrisons store could “deliver extensive qualitative benefits to the Cumbernauld community.”

The application adds: “The provision of a new foodstore with associated car parking facilities and enhanced public realm, will deliver extensive qualitative benefits to the Cumbernauld community.

“This Design and Access Statement illustrates the key principles and concepts that will shape the finalised proposals of the development.

“The proposals are practical, sensitive to the surrounding area and will bring about a positive contribution to the local environment that will revitalise this part of Cumbernauld.

“Overall it is considered that the proposals will take account of local, regional and national planning policies as well as meeting the needs and aspirations of the local community.”

North Lanarkshire Council are now inviting people to comment on the principle application, although Morrisons are confident that the community are on their side, after two consultation evenings heralded a “welcome response”, alongside a survey by Cumbernauld MSP Jamie Hepburn, to which the public also showed a favourable reaction to the development Morrisons proposed, the application adds.
