POLICE in North Lanarkshire have launched a murder inquiry after the body of a 27-year-old man was found in a car park, yesterday.

Officers in Coatbridge said that the incident was being treated as 'suspicious', earlier today, although police say that they have now launched a murder investigation.

The announcement by Police Scotland comes after a member of the public seen the body at around 06.30am, yesterday, in the Hozier Street area of Whifflet, Coatbridge.

The street is south of the town centre and close to the town’s train station, with the street also home to Mary's Primary School and St Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

A post mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death and Detectives have said they have been checking CCTV and speaking to local people in an effort to establish what the man was doing earlier.

Meanwhile, police officers have appealed for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact them, via the non-emergency number 101.

Detective Chief Inspector Kenny Graham of Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team launched the appeal for information.

Mr Graham said: "The man's body was discovered by a member of the public around 0630 hours this morning.

"Detectives are currently checking CCTV in the area and speaking to local people in an effort to establish the last movements of the man and understand what happened to him.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in that area overnight or during the evening of Saturday to contact police.

"Officers will be patrolling the area and anyone with any concerns or information can speak to them or contact Coatbridge police office on 01236 502000."
