THERE are only five days left until Strathclyde Country Park will host the Get Active Lanarkshire event, with families throughout Lanarkshire now counting down the minutes until the free family fun day gets under-way  this Saturday.

The Get Active Lanarkshire fun day will take over Strathclyde Country Park, this Saturday, with a vast array of activities on offer, including a skate park, a climbing wall, trampolines, canoeing, kayaking, golf, rugby, basketball, football, slides and walking.

Get Active Lanarkshire is part of a Commonwealth Games legacy initiative which aims to encourage Lanarkshire residents to get more active more often by increasing their physical activity in the run up to and beyond the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Commenting, Gabe Docherty NHS Lanarkshire Health Promotion manager, said: “This is shaping up to be a fantastic day and everyone who attends will be able to find out about the many benefits of adopting a more active lifestyle as well as the vast array of clubs, groups and services they can access to help them do this.

“A big part of the initiative is the Get Active Lanarkshire pledge which we want to encourage everyone to sign which asks people to make a commitment to make even a small change to their everyday life to increase their physical activity.

“For some this may mean joining a club or group, but for others it could mean walking the dog longer or using the stairs instead of the lift.”

The Get Active Lanarkshire fun day will take place on Saturday 1 June at Strathclyde Country Park from noon to 5pm, and the event is being led by a partnership of agencies including NHS Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC), North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL), Healthy Working Lives the University of the West of Scotland and the voluntary sector.
