CUMBERNAULD teenager Hannah McInally, has been announced as the Internet Ranger of Year, Scotland 2012, by British Telecom.

The fifteen year old Cumbernauld teen scooped the award, earlier this month after putting her IT skills to use; helping family members become tech-sazzy.

Hannah’s patience and enthusiasm led her to teach her grandmother how to use the computer and access the internet, assisting her to use social media sites to keep in regular contact with friends and family who live overseas. The end result has seen Hannah’s grandmother using a desktop computer every day; even opening up an internet banking account, and considering an iPad in the near future - thanks to young McInally’s tutelage.

Kathleen, Hannah’s grandmother described the improvement in her IT skills as “incredible”

She said: “The improvement in my IT skills has been incredible, thanks to Hannah. I am now able to use Facebook, do my shopping online and play spider solitaire. I am so grateful for her time and persistence. I can now contact my friends and relatives who live in Australia – it’s wonderful!”

Hannah added to her grandmother’s words, saying she found the experience of teaching her grandmother to get up to speed “very rewarding”.

Hannah said: “I have found the experience of teaching my grandmother how to use the computer and the internet very rewarding. It has definitely improved my patience and increased my confidence. The best part of the experience though has been that it has brought us closer together.

“Teaching someone how to use the computer and the internet takes a lot of effort, but my advice to other students who would like to help their friends and family is to take your time and teach one step at a time.”

For her hard work, Hannah has received the BT Internet Ranger of the Year Award 2012/13 for Scotland; receiving an iPad and £100 worth of IT vouchers for her enthusiasm and patience.
