Cumbernauld's Ice House shut up shop years ago, but refurbishment kick started rumours of a new retailer to the town. Picture is copyright of Bill Henry and is used on his courtesy.

RUMOURS have been rife about who now rents the long standing empty Ice House unit on St. Mungo’s Road.

The old Cumbernauld ice rink has lane empty for years; standing as a material embodiment of the decline of Cumbernauld’s once revered town centre – the first such structure in the United Kingdom.

For almost one year, though, local residents have been wondering what the future of the unit will be after an August 2012 article, on Cumbernauld Media, revealed that talked were underway.

In the end, talks fell down with national retail chain, Aldi, with Morrisons later recognising that the unit simply wouldn’t meet their needs, before the company settled on Westfield Road, adjacent to St. Maurice’s High School.

In March, this year, we then brought you the story of the supposed new owners being Adventure Planet, a local indoor soft play area for children, in Westfield Industrial Park. However, Adventure Planet exclusively told Cumbernauld Media that they “weren’t going anywhere”, leaving thousands of businesses as the potential new owners of the unit.

Today, however, Cumbernauld Media has learned that the most likely occupant is an Italian themed restaurant, with nine restaurants throughout Scotland.

Tony Macaroni – the name of the restaurant who may soon be coming to Cumbernauld started by opening a restaurant in East Kilbride, six years ago.

Now, though, the restaurant chain has grown exponentially, with branches now in Glasgow Merchant City, Glasgow Byres Road, East Kilbride, Livingston, Largs and Motherwell.

Cumbernauld Media tried to contact the restaurant to secure confirmation that the outlet were to open up at Cumbernauld’s Ice House. No response was achieved on the specific location of the restaurant, although a spokesperson said planning permission was passed and Cumbernauld would soon have a Tony Macaroni on its doorstep.

The spokesperson said: “Planning permission has been granted for a 150-seat Tony Macaroni restaurant and takeaway in the town centre, due to open late 2013.”
