CUMBERNAULD schoolgirl Beth Gilmour has said that the new merchandise of the Commonwealth Games mascot – which she designed – is “absolutely adorable”.

The thirteen year old Cumbernauld schoolgirl was presented with the very first "cuddly" Clyde 2014 mascot, last week, as the creator behind the mascot for next year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Clyde was unveiled as the face of Glasgow's Commonwealth Games last year after young Beth won a national competition for children aged between 6 and 15 to draw up mascot designs, which was then judged by staff from Glasgow 2014 and the BBC; a competition which received more than 4000 entries.

The new cuddly toy, which will retail for £8 or £13 for a larger version, is the start of a new merchandise line that will be released to bring in commercial revenue in the run up to the Games next year.

Commenting, Beth said: "Seeing Clyde brought to life always makes me smile and I think the soft toys are absolutely adorable. It's great that I now have a real reminder of Clyde to keep at home and see every day. I hope lots of people will now be able to enjoy having their very own Clyde too."

The soft toys can be bought online at shop.glasgow2014.com and will shortly be supplied to stockists including museums and airports.

Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive Ty Speer added: "Clyde has been very warmly received across the length and breadth of Scotland, and has certainly brought his cheeky personality to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"The launch of our Cuddly Clyde soft toys has been much anticipated and is a great opportunity for people to show their support for the Games."
