JAMIE Hepburn, SNP MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth has taken has concerns over council proposals to shut local swimming pools to Holyrood.

Mr Hepburn wrote to North Lanarkshire Council in March, this year, to ask why Cumbernauld and Kilsyth were being targeted for pool closures, although the area’s MSP has now raised the matter in the Scottish Parliament.

During a Health and Wellbeing Portfolio Question Time session Mr Hepburn highlighted the local authority’s plans which would see all the school swimming pools closed in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area.

In her response to Mr Hepburn’s questions, the Minister for Sports Shona Robison MSP revealed that the Local Authority has stopped participating in a Scottish Government program designed to ensure that all children in Scotland learn to swim.

Mr Hepburn has previously written to the Council to set out his opposition to the plans which would see Abronhill High School, Cumbernauld High School, Greenfaulds High School, Kilsyth Academy and St Maurice’s High School all losing their pools.

Commenting on the exchange Mr Hepburn said: “This is an appalling decision by the Council and I was glad to be able to highlight it in Parliament.”

“The response I received from the Minister was welcome and highly informative. It is clear that the Scottish Government is taking serious steps to promote swimming.”

“It is profoundly disappointing that the Council is going in the opposite direction. The fact that it is not only planning to close every last school pool in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth but also they have withdrawn from a successful Government program is indefensibly short-sighted behaviour.”

“The Council has a very serious case to answer and should they decide to press ahead with these unwanted closures then they will be making it far harder for children in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth to learn to swim and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.”
