RESIDENTS who commute to and from Cumbernauld, by train, will have severely affected services, from this weekend.

ScotRail have announced that to allow for essential works to electrify the rail at Cumbernauld train station as part of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvement Programme, select train services to and from Cumbernauld train station will be replaced by bus services.

Some of the arrangements could continue until next year, in order to allow for the essential works to take place on the line at Cumbernauld train station.

“From Sunday 23 June 2013 Network Rail is carrying out long term engineering improvements as part of a wider rail electrification programme within the central belt,” a spokesperson said.

“This means that buses replace trains on the above routes from around 19:30 hrs, five days a week, Sunday to Thursday.”

On Friday and Saturdays, the normal timetable will run all day. However, a number of services will be affected by the improvement works, which will see replacement buses laid on.

The line between Gartcosh - Cumbernauld / Falkirk Grahamston and Motherwell – Cumbernauld will have buses replace trains from 7.30pm, on 26th June 2013, on Wednesdays and Thursday.

Meanwhile, between Glasgow Queen St and Cumbernauld / Falkirk Grahamston, from Sunday 23rd  June 2013, buses will replace trains from around 7.30pm on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

ScotRail have also indicated that there will be all day closures, between Glasgow – Cumbernauld, with the first two schedules from Sunday 30th June and Sunday 7th July.

The all-day closures are to allow, “Network Rail to be able to undertake major signalling, track, bridge demolition and overhead line work, a number of all-day Sunday closures are also planned between Glasgow – Cumbernauld,” according to ScotRail.
