The new Airdrie Community Health Centre was officially opened by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Alex Neil MSP, yesterday.

The Minister, who is also the local MSP, commemorated the official opening by saying the new centre was “providing modern facilities and equipment that are required for a first class, 21st century health service.”

The Cabinet Secretary was joined at the official opening of the £27 million state-of-the-art community health facility by NHS Lanarkshire chair Neena Mahal.

The development – with 80,000 square feet of floor space – is one of the largest of its kind in Scotland and health services in the new facility include dental; podiatry; dietetics; paediatric services; occupational therapy; physiotherapy, community nursing, mental health services and eight GP practices.

Alex Neil said: “I’m well aware of what an asset this new health centre has been since it became operational.

“It brings a whole range of services together under one roof and it is clear that all of the effort that has gone into the planning and construction of the facility has been more than worth it.

“I would like to extend my personal thanks to all who have been involved.

“Having the right facilities, in the right place, is so important and that is why we are continuing to invest in ensuring that both staff and patients can work and be treated in the best possible surroundings.”

The new facility signifies the end of a tranche of NHS Lanarkshire primary care capital developments which began back in March 2009 with Bellshill Community Health Clinic.

Since then new health facilities have opened in Douglas Street, Hamilton; a new learning disability, assessment and treatment centre at Kirklands Hospital; Beckford Lodge in Hamilton; Carluke Community Health Centre;  and a new mental health, complex needs unit at Glencairn in Coathill Hospital, Coatbridge.

NHS Lanarkshire is also looking forward to brand new community health facilities in Wishaw, East Kilbride and Kilsyth.

NHS Lanarkshire chair Neena Mahal said: “On behalf of NHS Lanarkshire I would like to thank everyone who contributed to bringing this centre to fruition, this includes all our partners such as AWG property and the construction company Morgan Sindall, along with members of the public who were involved in the design process.

“However, as with any new facility, the resource which best compliments it is the skill, care and commitment of the staff.

“I would like to thank all the NHS Lanarkshire staff in the centre for all their patience and hard work over the duration of this project.

“Ultimately it is their skill and care which will allow us to get the best out of this new facility and provide better health care for the people of Airdrie.”
