SCOTLAND and Britain are hurting. That’s the message which the Scottish Trade Union Congress and a number of Scottish trade unions will bring to Cumbernauld, tomorrow.

The ‘There is a Better Way’ campaign will bring their ‘Austerity Uncovered’ campaign tour bus to Cumbernauld, tomorrow afternoon, in a move which will seek to prove that UK Government austerity is causing harm to peoples’ lives, with certain government policies being legally questionable.

“STUC has put together a range of meetings and events between 21st and 29th June,” John Miller, a spokesman for the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Defend Public Sector Jobs and Services campaign told Cumbernauld Media.

“Working with local community groups, they will visit unemployed workers centres, food banks and other community facilities to highlight how austerity is affecting people and how it isn`t working.”

The bus will be at the stairs leading up to St. Mungo’s Parish Church tomorrow, from 1pm, Mr Miller added.

“Events culminate in Scotland united against the bedroom tax conference in Meadowbank Stadium Edinburgh 10.00am-2.30pm.”

A spokesperson for the ‘There is a Better Way’ campaign said the main message of the event is that Scotland and Britain are hurting, adding: “Too many politicians have no idea just how tough life is for the many.

“Prices are rising while wages are held back. Service cuts are biting hard. And getting tough on so-called cheats is used as an excuse to cut vital benefits and tax credits for millions who have played by the rules.

“In June 2013, the STUC & Scottish Trade Unions will be visiting towns and cities in Scotland and Britain’s trade unions will be travelling across the country, letting people tell their own story about life across the countries of the UK.

“We are making videos, blogging what we find, and bringing journalists to report life on the front line of austerity.

“We are gathering the evidence to convict government policies. They are hurting, but they are not working.

“The STUC campaign bus will visit communities, join with local groups fighting for fair benefits and against the bedroom tax, support low-paid workers campaigning for fair pay and send a message to Scotland’s young people that we will fight with them to avoid another lost generation.”
