STUDENTS at two Lanarkshire colleges will have the opportunity of a lifetime after their colleges announced a new course – in security.

Cumbernauld College and Motherwell College have announced that they will run a new course, in partnership with Skills Development Scotland, which will allow students to gain nationally recognised qualifications in security and spectator safety.

The institutions will provide students with the opportunity to take up the free Employability & Skills Programme, which could see some learners go on to form part of the security team at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

John McNair, Head of Business and Community Development at Cumbernauld College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the Commonwealth Games and we are thrilled to be working with Skills Development Scotland to deliver this course.”

As part of the programme, the course will also provide two weeks’ work experience at a top UK event security company and, on successful completion, an interview with one of the security companies contracted to the Commonwealth Games 2014 is guaranteed.

John added: “Not only will it allow students the opportunity to take part in a massive and exciting event, but will also provide the skills needed for a successful career in event security.”
The course will be fully funded by both colleges and will enable students to apply for the SIA licence, which will allow the student to work across a variety of sectors including sporting and entertainment events.
The colleges are hosting two information sessions and prospective students who are interested are encouraged to attend.
These will take place at Cumbernauld College on Tuesday, 16 July, between 12noon and 2pm, and 4pm and 6pm, and at Motherwell College on Wednesday, 17 July, between 12noon and 2pm, and 4pm and 6pm.
