ITS ‘business as usual’ at two Lanarkshire colleges, despite comments from Labour politicians that Cumbernauld College was to be “swallowed” up by Motherwell as the colleges prepare to merge, later this year.

Cumbernauld College and Motherwell College will merge in November to form New College Lanarkshire, in a bid to widen course access and produce savings as part of a nationwide regionalisation of colleges.

However, a couple of weeks ago, two local Labour politicians caused what was described as “scaremongering” by Cumbernauld’s SNP MSP, Jamie Hepburn, as Cumbernauld MP, Gregg McClymont and Central Scotland MSP, Mark Griffin said letters sent by the Scottish Government appeared to show that the Scottish Government wanted to take away Cumbernauld College’s “independent” identity, by ordering its closure.

Online, residents and students began to react to the story, although the Scottish Government later intervened to define the closure as a business merger, with assets moving to Motherwell College, along with the retention of facilities at Broadwood, Cumbernauld, East Dunbartonshire and Motherwell.

The saga has now seen Cumbernauld College and Motherwell College issue a statement, which attempts to make it clear that it’s ‘business as usual’.

A spokesperson for the colleges said: “As you may be aware, Cumbernauld College and Motherwell College are merging in November 2013.

“This will be to the benefit of students across Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire and New College Lanarkshire will deliver a more comprehensive learning experience, offering more choice.

“New College Lanarkshire will operate from its existing campuses in Motherwell, Cumbernauld and East Dunbartonshire.

“Programmes and the application process for the new academic year will remain the same. Students will not be adversely affected by the changes in any way and we will operate ‘Business as Usual’.

“If you have any questions about the merger, you can visit our merger site at www.newcollegelanarkshire or contact us by email”
