NORTH Lanarkshire is now home to the first full inclusive skating club for people with disabilities, NL Leisure, the body who operate the region’s sports facilities have announced.

North Lanarkshire Leisure have declared, today, that the Time Capsule is now home to the UK's first fully inclusive skating club for people with disabilities, with the skating sessions allowing the families of disabled skaters to join them on the ice, receive coaching and, with the help of volunteers, build their skating skills.

Following the re-opening of the Time Capsule’s ice rink in December 2012, the Coatbridge-based attraction received £300,000 in lottery funding which helped contribute towards the setting up of the skating club.

Commenting, Former ladies skating champion Margarita Sweeney-Baird who is Head of Impaired Skating said: "Thanks to the support of North Lanarkshire Leisure the club is proving to be really popular with the local community and beyond. It gives children with disabilities, along with their families and friends, the chance to take part in ice sports as a physical activity.

"What makes this activity unique for the disabled community is that the whole family can take part. I am excited for the future of this programme and the benefits it can bring."

Blane Dodds, Chief Executive, North Lanarkshire Leisure added: "We are proud to be the first ice rink in the UK to offer fully inclusive skating and it is great to see people getting their skates on and enjoying the ice. Ice skating is an activity that can be enjoyed by all and it is a brilliant way to spend family time together.
