Cumbernauld Rugby Club have said that Cumbernauld’s first all-girls rugby team “enjoyed the experience” as they competed in a rugby competition in Ayr last week.

The troupe of seven girls were the first ever all-female rugby team to represent Cumbernauld in any form of rugby competition.

The team was comprised of girls taken from schools across the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area, meaning that the team represented Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, as well as the wider North Lanarkshire area, as the team entered the Ayr tournament.

The team went on to lose their first match in Ayr, but a spokesperson for Cumbernauld Rugby Club said that even through the team’s results “…might not have gone their way,” adding: “…they all enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to the game next week.”

The spokesperson added: “Whilst they have trained for several weeks, for all the girls this was their first taste of competitive rugby.”
