Background

The highlight of Cumbernauld’s calendar, the town’s local Gala Day is a colourful cavalcade of entertainment, festivities, fun and stalls, all held in the centre of Cumbernauld.

Organised by a sub-committee of Cumbernauld Community Forum, the annual Gala Day extravaganza is pulled together by a number of high-profile and hard-working local community groups, such as the Rotary Club, Keep Calm Events, Hope Community Garden, Cumbernauld Gardening Club and many more. The event is sponsored by corporate partners too, including the Cumbernauld campus of New College Lanarkshire, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, NHS Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire Council, Scottish Water and Sanctuary Cumbernauld.

Planning the near five hour Gala takes nearly one-year, and organisation of the annual occasion commences almost immediately after the preceding Gala Day is over, as individuals from various local groups pull together to deliver the Day, which has found a place in the calendars and hearts of many residents of Cumbernauld once again, after the town’s original Gala Days were wound up, along with the Cumbernauld Development Corporation and Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District Council.

Gala Day 2014

This year’s event will take place on Saturday 21st June 2014, at Cumbernauld New Town Hall, although the event will take over the car park of the town’s Central Health Centre, the car park of the New Town Hall and, if necessary, the Link Community Facility, on Bron Way. It will be the biggest Gala Day yet, as this year’s Gala is set to mark the five year anniversary of the Gala’s return, in 2010.

Final arrangements are yet to be announced for this year’s event, although it known that it will commemorate the start of World War One, with activities expected to themed around WW1. The Day will also be larger than any Gala Day before it, with a number of fun fair rides expected to take over the car park of Cumbernauld Central Health Centre, in addition to various live performances by bands, dance groups and solo artists, not to mention the usual crowning of the Gala Queen and Princesses, who will come from Greenfaulds High School, this year.

Getting involved

A number of things are required for any Gala Day to be properly organised and run on the day itself; organisers of Cumbernauld Gala Day, for instance, start preparations for the Saturday morning on the preceding Friday evening, and come back before 8am on the Saturday morning, to make further arrangements for the event to take place. The Gala Day sub-committee say that people can get involved in a variety of ways.

Businesses, groups and people are able to book out stalls at the annual Gala Day, and stalls can be booked for either inside or outside Cumbernauld New Town Hall, at a cheap cost. The booking forms are available through the Cumbernauld Community Forum website (see ‘Elsewhere online). The sub-committee are also appealing for local acts, artists, bands and performers to make their interest known in performing at the Gala Day; you can do this by contacting the Forum in a variety of ways (see ‘Elsewhere online).
