Fire crews remain on the scene this afternoon.

AN ELDERLY Cumbernauld resident has lost her life in a fire which ripped through her family home, this morning (5th June).

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has provided details of the incident after their crews were called to the scene of a “well-developed” fire, at a house in Cumbernauld.

Two appliances from Cumbernauld Community Fire Station and a third from Easterhouse were sent to Craigelvan Gardens, in Condorrat, earlier today.

The crews were called out following a 999 emergency call, which the Fire Service said had been received at around 11:20am today (5th June).

“Firefighters arrived approximately five minutes later to find a well-developed fire within a single-storey property and a fourth appliance was sent from Kilsyth to increase the number of personnel available at the scene,” a spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service explained.

The Service’s spokesman added: “Teams in breathing apparatus are continuing to operate inside the property, which has sustained a partial collapse.

“Work to bring the fire under control and complete a systematic search is still ongoing. The incident is likely to continue for some time and no further information is currently available.”

This afternoon, more information has been issued regarding the fire, with confirmation from emergency services that around 25 firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze.

Hannah Rodger, a reporter with the Glasgow Evening Times was on the scene earlier, and in a report for the Times, she described how a relative of the family who live in the fire-torn house had returned from work to see emergency services tackle the blaze.

Talking to the Evening Times, the man is reported to have said: "I don't know what has happened.

“It's my family's house, we just found out there was a fire and I've just come from nightshift,” the man explained.
