BUSINESSES, churches, a fire station and a museum throughout Cumbernauld are preparing to open up their doors to the public for this year’s Doors Open Day event.

Across North Lanarkshire some 31 venues are set to open up their operations to tours and behind the scene visits.

Some of the region’s most unusual and interesting buildings and monuments will be open to the public over the course of the national event, which will run between September 12th and 13th in Lanarkshire.

Churches, fire stations, factories, a sheriff court and behind-the-scenes tours of museums are among the highlights of this year's free event which is organised locally by North and South Lanarkshire Councils as well as the Scottish Civic Trust.

"Across Lanarkshire we have a host of buildings, old and new, of historical and architectural interest and Doors Open Days give everyone a chance to explore them," Councillor Stephanie Griffin, Vice Convener of North Lanarkshire Council’s Planning and Transportation Committee explained.

"There will be tours and family activities at the venues, and entry to all the buildings taking part is free of charge. So visit our web site and find out what's happening on your doorstep,” she added.

In Cumbernauld, the AG Barr’s factory will be running tours, while the Church of the Holy Name Scottish Episcopal Church, in Seafar, will also be open to the public.

Elsewhere across Cumbernauld, places such as Cumbernauld Community Fire Station, Cumbernauld Museum, Cumbernauld Old Parish Church, Kildrum Parish Church, Palacerigg Animal House and Millennium Longhouses, Sacred Heart Church, and the Stuart House Multi Storey Flats will all open up for the annual event.

Although some locations require pre-booking, most are free and the majority of locations do not require pre-booking. There’s more information on the Doors Open Day event,
