Plans to expand and refurbish the operating theatres and intensive care unit (ICU) at Monklands District General Hospital have taken a major step forward.

The Board of NHS Lanarkshire has approved the outline business case (OBC) for the £17.9m investment programme.

Colin Sloey, NHS Lanarkshire director of strategic planning and performance, said: “We are delighted that the board has approved the outline business case for this very important work.

“Monklands Hospital is the subject of on-going investment through the NHS Lanarkshire Board to ensure that all facilities in the hospital are able to support the ever increasing levels of demand for specialist acute clinical care.

“This latest business case will enable the operating theatres and intensive care facilities to be rebuilt to meet the highest standards of treatment and care now and in future years.

“This investment shows the Board’s commitment to meeting the needs and aspirations of both patients and staff.”

As part of the approval process, NHS Lanarkshire has submitted the OBC to the Scottish Government for consideration by their capital investment group.

Under plans, the seven existing theatres would undergo an extensive refurbishment programme alongside the construction of a new build 10 bed ICU.

If the project is given approval to proceed, the new facilities will be complete during the 2017/18 financial year.

Rhona Roberton, director of hospital services for Monklands Hospital, said: “Approval of this outline business case will ensure that the project can move forward towards the development of the full business case for this vital upgrade.

“The refurbishment and upgrade work will provide a facility which is fitted to the highest standards, improve the provision of ICU care and modernise healthcare delivery at Monklands Hospital.”
