CUMBERNAULD and Kilsyth SNP MSP, Jamie Hepburn has spoken to Cumbernauld Media, as part of our brand new web-based series, ‘Why I’m Yes’.

As part of the new series, videos will regularly be uploaded to Youtube which feature interviews with the key faces behind the local pro-independence campaign, led by Yes Cumbernauld. The town’s MSP was the first person to be interviewed for the series which will be broadcast through the Cumbernauld Media Youtube channel – ‘Cumbernauld Television’.

Facing a variety of questions, such as his personal reasons for backing independence, his reaction to polling statistics and his vision for an independent Scotland, the area’s man at Holyrood outlined the reasons he feels people should back Scotland leaving the United Kingdom.

“Well, out of 22 years of my 35 year life, we’ve had governments that we didn’t elect here, in Scotland,” Mr Hepburn said.

“So, the first key advantage with independence would be that we always get the government of our choosing; and, I think that’s important because if we look over past years, we have seen governments we didn’t support at the ballot box taking many bad decisions for us here, in Scotland,” he added.

“And, if we look beyond that, we see that Scotland is very well placed to be a successful country, with many important economic sectors, such as oil and gas, renewables, food and drink, Scotch whiskey, finance, tourism, agriculture – those are the ingredients for the recipe to make Scotland a very successful country.”

Mr Hepburn – who had just fielded questions from local residents at a special ‘Yes Q&A’ event, at Cumbernauld New Town Hall when the interview was recorded – added: “However, despite having all of these requisite parts to have a successful society, too many people don’t benefit, in Scotland; we have too many people missing out on the opportunities that they could otherwise have. If we were independent, I think we could provide them with those opportunities.”

The new ‘Why I’m Yes’ series will see various local pro-independence campaigners outline their vision for a separate Scotland and outline why they believe Scotland should be an independent country.

The videos will then be uploaded to Youtube and will hopefully help local voters to better understand the arguments for and against independence, as the referendum on whether or not Scotland should divorce the UK marriage nears.

Mr Hepburn’s video will appear alongside interviews with Ann Ballinger, from the Cumbernauld branch of ‘Women for Independence’, and Rachel Glover from Yes Cumbernauld.

Scots will go to the polls on Thursday 18 September and answer the straightforward ‘Yes/No’ question, ‘Should Scotland be an independent country?’.
