Sport activities to take place throughout the summer

SPORTS centres throughout North Lanarkshire will be aiming to keep kids calm, cool and entertained this summer, with a packed schedule of summer sporting activities planned to take place across the region.

North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd – the arm’s length organisation used by North Lanarkshire Council to deliver sport and recreation activities and services throughout North Lanarkshire – have confirmed that a variety of activities will take place over the summer months to keep kids entertained during the holidays.

Football, tennis, dancing and swimming activities will all be on offer to keep youngsters busy during the upcoming summer of sport, when Scotland will host the Commonwealth Games.

Blane Dodds, Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said the planned activities will make for a “fantastic summer for keeping active.”

He said: "With the World Cup, Wimbledon and of course the Commonwealth Games taking place right here in North Lanarkshire it will be a fantastic summer for keeping active.

“Throughout the summer holidays at sports centres across North Lanarkshire.

“It all kicks off on Monday 30 June and run right through until the end of the school holidays at sports centres across North Lanarkshire.”

As part of the plans, football sessions are due to take place at Wishaw and Broadwood sports centres with dance camps on at both the Aquatec and Broadwood sports facilities.

Tennis is always a big hit during the summer months and Wishaw sports centre will be playing host to lessons on the outdoor courts, whilst the brand new BMX track at Broadwood sports centre looks set to open on June 30.

Nicky Laughlin, Sports Co-ordinator with North Lanarkshire Leisure added to Mr Dodds’s comments. He said that the programme will be “great” and ensure that kids “keep active” will off school.

He said: "Our programmes offer a great place for kids to keep active during the school holidays.

"They provide an excellent opportunity to meet new friends and to learn in a fun environment.

"We want to encourage kids to lead a healthy lifestyle and our range of activities gives parents and carers a huge choice to get youngsters out for some fun and exercise during the holidays."

Free swimming will also be on offer for under 16's at pools from Monday to Fridays between 10am and 4pm. Swimmers must show their North Lanarkshire Young Scot or Kidz Kard.
